| PRESS RELEASE The Hominy Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Hominy Heritage Association is pleased to announce the construction of the Hominy Indians Memorial. The Memorial will be built on the Northwest corner of Main and Price. Currently a fund raising campaign is being put together to finance the memorial and the hope is to have everything finalized in the very near future. Mr. Art Shoemaker is the President of the Hominy Heritage Association and he stated, “I have wanted to see this memorial happen for quite some time and I am thrilled that it is about to happen.” A special fund has been set up at the First National Bank in Hominy, OK. where donations to the Memorial can be made. If you wish to donate to the fund, you may contact Daniel Johnson or Robyn Ryan at P O Box 8, Hominy, OK, 74035. Checks should be made payable to the: “Hominy Indians Memorial”, and mailed to the address listed above. Final sketches of the Memorial and details of the fund raising campaign will be announced in a future press release. In the 1920’s, The Hominy Indians Professional Football Team was organized by Ira Hamilton an Osage Indian from Hominy. Pete Houser became the first permanent coach. They competed against teams across the country for ten amazing years. They played all comers. They played on fields that were nothing more than chalked-off pastures, and they played in stadiums seating fifty thousand fans. They played because they loved the game, and because they could play as an all-Indian unit. In 1927 the New York Giants had just defeated the New York Yankees in a New York City title match and were considered “World Champions”. The Hominy Indians defeated the “World Champions” 13 – 6 and claimed the title for themselves. Both the Hominy Chamber and the Hominy Heritage Association are non-profit organizations.
